Today is July 4! Also known as American Independence Day. Yes, we’ll gloss over the fact that it was England whom America declared independence from and I am now a permanent resident in England. I am still American, however, and still celebrate the 4th of July. The last two years, I spent the afternoon in Ella’s reception and preschool classes sharing the history of the 4th of July and making American flags with the children. This year, I’m not. I’m not sure why I forgot to offer my historical services but I am a bit sad that I have forgotten. It’s hard celebrating a uniquely American holiday in another country. The 4th of July often sneaks up on me. I share my memories of Independence Days gone by on Cafe Bebe today so pop on over there to read what it means to me.
In the meantime, raise a cuppa or a glass of bubbly (after 5pm please) or even a glass of Pimms for Americans both far and near. They will certainly be celebrating where they are! Do you have Americans around you who are a bit homesick today? Invite them over for tea or a BBQ! Help them to feel happy on a day that can be very hard when their family is miles and miles away. Any excuse for a bit of BBQ and bubbly right?
Happy 4th of July to my friends and family both here and abroad! I will be thinking of you tonight when we are roasting marshmallows and making S’mores.
